Fakes and frauds are keeping Americans on the wrong side of the ...

Last month, CNN’s Dr. Sanjay Gupta warned cell-phone users of potential danger from radiation and encouraged everyone to use a wired earpiece for all calls, just like he does.

At one point, he showed a YouTube video of people using their cell phones to make popcorn. The video was a joke — it can’t be done (there are many of these fraud popcorn videos on YouTube — here’s one ). Gupta used it to get attention, and it illustrated his concern about holding cell phones close to the head.

The video, however, also illustrated how people can easily be deceived on the Internet. Experienced Web prowlers know this, and they keep their guard up. But what about the inexperienced?

When they see Dr. Gupta’s video of Internet fakery, they may be charmed by his cleverness but also disturbed by the untrustworthy nature of Internet information.

And that tells them one thing — stay off the Web. A recent study shows that while many Americans have broadband access to the Web in their homes, millions of others have not yet subscribed. The reasons behind this digital divide are manifold. One is economic — broadband costs money, and poor families see it as a luxury. Another is cultural — there may not be enough on the Web to attract some minority families, especially if English is not their first language.

But there is a third reason — distrust.

Where did she go? Inexperienced users are reminded often that the Web can’t be trusted. Gupta’s airing of the popcorn video is one example. Another is the case of the disappearing Hillary Clinton.

We’ve all seen the photo of President Barack Obama and his national security team in the Situation Room of the White House, getting an update on the mission as Navy Seals landed in Abbottabad, entered Osama bin Laden’s compound, and shot him dead.

Not so iconic but still all over the Web is the same picture in an altered state — no Clinton, the secretary of state, and no Audrey Tomason, the national director of counterterrorism. They’ve both been digitally deleted — disappeared by technology and by the editors of Di Tzeitung , a Hasidic newspaper in Brooklyn. The editors say publishing photos of women sexualizes them, so they took them out.

“In accord with our religious beliefs,” the editors explained to the Washington Post, “we do not publish photos of women, which in no way relegates them to a lower status…. Because of laws of modesty, we are not allowed to publish pictures of women, and we regret if this gives an impression of disparaging to women, which is certainly never our intention. We apologize if this was seen as offensive.
