Canon Pixma MX882
Known for delivering high quality at a reasonable price, Canon delivers the Honda Accord of all-in-one printers with the $199 Pixma MX882. Most of the all-in-one (AIO) inkjet printers we’ve seen recently have fallen into one of two categories. On the one end you have extremely inexpensive, bare-bones models that usually cost less than $100, and on the other end of the spectrum are high-end units with all sorts of features and add-ons that will usually run you $300 or more. But finding a printer that falls somewhere in the middle—one that is reliable, safe, and affordable, without a ton of features to drive up the price, but doesn't skimp on anything that is truly necessary—that can be a bit of a challenge.
The Canon Pixma MX882 is one such well-balanced printer. It sports a ton of features that office workers will love, including an automatic document feeder (ADF), fax capabilities, commendable output, and excellent networking and connectivity options. It even has an innovative, easy-to-use control panel that we wouldn’t expect to see on an AIO in this price range. (Sort of like getting a free sunroof on your Accord.) It’s not the fastest AIO out there, but it does everything it needs to do well. Small and home office users who can’t pay for the best but want the best for what they can afford, will do well to look at the MX882.
DesignThe Pixma MX882 is a black plastic box that measures 8.6x19.4x16.4 inches (HWD). Weighing in at just under 26 pounds, the unit tapers on the top and bottom. Its design is sleek and stylish, even if the body is a little larger than other AIOs in this class. We could see it fitting into a living room as well as an office, as long as you have the desktop real estate for it.
The controls sit along a sloped edge on the front of the body. A 3-inch, color LCD shows the printer’s menus, which are controlled by a series of 16 buttons. Paper is loaded into either the main paper cassette beneath the output tray on the front of the unit, or rear-mounted feeder tray (for special media). On the top of the MX882 is a 30-page ADF for copying, scanning, or faxing multiple pages, and there's an adjoining output tray underneath it.
You can connect the Pixma MX882 to a PC or Mac via USB 2.0 or Bluetooth and network it via Ethernet or Wi-Fi. The USB, Ethernet, and RJ-45 (for fax) jacks are located on the back of the printer. In addition, memory-card slots on the front of the printer support a host of common formats, including SDHC and CompactFlash. A PictBridge port on the bottom right of the front face allows for direct-from-device printing for cameras and USB drives. Just above the card readers, a blue light signals Wi-Fi usage. The power cord is recessed into the rear of the printer, meaning the unit can sit flush against a wall (unless you have the rear paper feeder folded out, which requires about 6 extra inches behind the printer.
