Sandy Point salvage completed

GULFPORT -- Omega Protein Inc.’s wrecked Sandy Point pogy boat has been salvaged from the Mississippi Sound and now sits in two pieces at the state port.

Contractor Inland Salvage Inc. finished bringing ashore the 163-foot boat on Monday. Inland cut the 163-foot boat in half to pull it from the water because it was too badly damaged to salvage in one piece, according to the Coast Guard. Inland used A-frame derrick barges to raise the bow section June 12. The stern section was raised in the same fashion. It arrived ashore Monday afternoon, bringing the salvage operation to a close.

The Sandy Point and the Eurus London, a 660-foot container ship outbound from the port with a load of bananas, collided the night of May 18. The Sandy Point was headed to Omega Protein Inc.’s Moss Point plant with a load of menhaden. Three Omega employees died in the accident, while 13 others were rescued.

The Coast Guard plans to determine whether the Sandy Point suffered any mechanical or engine problems that contributed to the accident. No details about the investigation will be released until it is completed.

The widow of one crew member who drowned aboard the Sandy Point, Thomas Moore, is suing both Omega and Eurus London owners for damages in U.S. District Court. Under Maritime Law, Omega has filed to limit any damages to the scrap value of the Sandy Point, which it estimates to be $50,000. Omega also has denied any wrongdoing in the accident.

Dredging Today – USA: STEPS Coalition Members Concerned Over Port ...

Community members in Gulfport are speaking out today about the $481 million expansion plans for the Port of Gulfport. Members of the STEPS Coalition held a news conference Monday morning outside the old 28th Street Elementary School to express their concerns.

Roberta Avila , Executive Director of the Steps Coalition, said ahead of the meeting that the port expansion would have a dramatic impact on North Gulfport communities and the City of Gulfport.

Members of the community want community sustainability that creates jobs while protecting air quality, property values and health. We want to protect residential areas from displacement because of industrial activity ,” said Ruth Story with the Gulfport NAACP. “ It is therefore essential that the Port Authority and Mississippi Development Authority know that investment in the port and investment in the community health are inseparable. Any port expansion/development should integrate the vision and needs of the community and result in positive outcomes such as sustainable, long-term economic benefits for the all of Gulfport and surrounding communities. We need an expansion that is the right size for Gulfport, and assurances that the port will hire local residents who are properly trained.
