Tell Mel: Businesses targets of phone book scammers
A number of small businesses are falling prey to yellow page scams.Mike Sappah sent me an email about one bogus yellow page company trying to shake him down after his wife unwittingly signed the contract for a listing.
Sappah is president of B.J. Enterprises in North Fort Myers. A fax came into the office for an update to the yellow pages listing.
The document showed the companys former address, so Sappahs wife and office manager, corrected the address, signed the form and faxed it back.
A few days later, Sappah received a $1,068 bill from Yellow Page Marketing B.V., a company based in the Netherlands.
Sappah ignored two bills until the company started sending threatening collection notices and tacking on $20 late fees. They attached the form Sappahs wife had signed and sent a letter stating in part:
Please note that by signing this purchase order form your company accepted the Terms & Conditions stated therein and it enabled us to register your company. At the same time you became legally bound to a contract binding you to a minimum period of two years and which cannot be cancelled before.
If Sappahs wife had read the form, she would have seen that this was not her local yellow pages directory and indeed she was committing to a two-year contract with cancellation terms so convoluted that the $534 annual fee could renew forever.
When Sappah talked to the companys representative, he was eventually given a cancellation option, but only if he paid $368 in administrative fees.
Sappah doesnt intend to pay a dime.
My wife honestly thought she was updating our local yellow pages. Please warn other businesses and anyone else who could fall into their trap, Sappah said.
Times are hard enough without getting scammed on things like this.
An Internet search of this company showed there are hundreds of small businesses getting caught in this scam. Business owners are being threatened and harassed but I havent read of anyone being hauled into court over the debt. And my guess is that it wont happen. These scammers probably scare enough people into paying to cover their costs and make a profit.
If youve fallen for this scam, complain to the Better Business Bureau of New York (where the company has what appears to be a mail drop) and complain to the attorneys general of Florida and New York. This is nothing but a shakedown, in my opinion, and something needs to be done to stop these guys from putting the squeeze on small business owners.

Vulnerability in Windows Fax Cover Page Editor Could - MSISAC
A vulnerability has been discovered in the Microsoft Windows Fax Cover Page Editor. Windows Fax Cover Page Editor enables users to create, modify, or view computer generated fax cover pages. Windows Fax Cover Page Editor is installed by default on Windows Vista Business Edition, Windows Vista Ultimate Edition, and in all supported editions of Windows 7. This vulnerability can be exploited if a user views a malicious web page, views a specially crafted Windows Fax Cover Page, or opens an email attachment containing a specially crafted image file designed to exploit the vulnerabilities.
Successful exploitation will result in an attacker gaining the same privileges as the logged on user. Depending on the privileges associated with the user, the attacker could then install programs; view, change, or delete data; or create new accounts with full privileges.
A memory corruption vulnerability has been discovered in the Windows Fax Cover Page Editor. This vulnerability exists due to Windows Fax Cover Page Editor improperly parsing fax cover pages (.cov) files. The vulnerability can be exploited if a user views a malicious web page, views a specially crafted Windows Fax Cover Page, or opens an email attachment containing a specially crafted file designed to exploit this vulnerability.
Successful exploitation will result in an attacker gaining the same privileges as the logged on user. Depending on the privileges associated with the user, the attacker could then install programs; view, change, or delete data; or create new accounts with full privileges.
It should be noted that in all supported editions of Windows XP, Vista Enterprise and Windows Server 2003, the Windows Fax Cover Page Editor is not installed by default. However, it is installed on Windows Vista Business and Windows Vista Ultimate Editions, and in all supported editions of Windows 7.
RECOMMENDATIONS: We recommend the following actions be taken:
Apply appropriate patches provided by Microsoft to vulnerable systems immediately after appropriate testing. Run all software as a non-privileged user (one without administrative privileges) to diminish theeffects of asuccessful attack. Do not visit untrusted websites or follow links provided by unknown or untrusted sources. Do not open email attachments from unknown or untrusted sources.
