Unsung hero: Toby Barton
IT TAKES a special person to shoulder the cares of the world, writes ANDREW MOLE
Measles can be a serious illness if you are in Melbourne, but in Malawi it could mean death.
When disaster hits far off countries, news of destruction, death and the displacement of millions dominates news coverage - until the next disaster.
Of course someone has to help.
But the thought of digging a metre of mud from a hospital in the Khyber Pass, in stifling heat and draining humidity is one that crosses few minds.
This is a job where you are dressed head to toe out of respect for the local culture.
With a leery eye over your shoulder for the men - and boys - with guns.
So who does go there? And why?
You could ask Kyneton's Toby Barton, because he has gone there.
Getting him to explain why is a little harder.
As he searches for tangible reasons, the complexity of the decision does not alter the fact it is a decision he will not regret.
The affable jack-of-all-trades, who splits his time between his family's small prime lamb flock and masonry business, signed on with Mecdecins Sans Frontieres (Doctors Without Borders) and has spent seven months in the past year in Africa and Pakistan.
As an MSF logistics specialist, he was expected to have skills in mechanics, warehousing, store keeping, pumps, sanitation, computers, construction and electronics.
"When I looked at their website and saw the position, I thought I ticked all the boxes and would fit the bill," Toby says.
"The only mistake I made was when I went to Sydney for the interview. I had never had an interview for anything and was s----ing myself.
"I turned up in a suit. Big mistake. Everyone else was in T-shirts and jeans. They must have looked at me as though I was from another planet.
"But I got the job and from there it was non-stop. A flight to New York for training, 12 hours a day, for 12 days straight."
The key to the training was to show how easy life can be.
In Malawi, Toby's day started at 4.30am and finished at midnight. If all went well there was time for a nap in the heat of the afternoon. If all didn't go well it was just more work in the heat of the afternoon.
"Each morning I had 47 cars and their teams which had to be stocked with vaccines and equipment," he says. "The program was to treat 3.5 million children in three months. The trick, in Africa, was to keep boxes and boxes of vaccine between 2C and 8C using 5500 ice packs.
Medical Ice Packs - News

The trick, in Africa, was to keep boxes and boxes of vaccine between 2C and 8C using 5500 ice packs. "That's a lot of ice, every day. Fortunately there was a functioning freezer at an old abattoir." Through it all Toby kept his sense of humour,

“They'll get IV fluids, they will get ice packs, certainly a fan with not-too-cool water misting over them to increase evaporation,” Mruzik said. In addition to recognizing these symptoms in yourself, Mruzik said you can help prevent injury for others
