Liquor store owners protest alcohol in Food Lion

Local liquor store owners plan to take a stand at an upcoming hearing for the transfer of a wine and beer license from Woodburns of Solomons to the Food Lion chain store off H.G. Trueman Road in Lusby.

Mike and Carolyn Hart, owners of Patuxent Wine & Spirits across the street from the grocery store, said they just found out about the plans last week and have formed an unofficial team of about eight or nine liquor stores who oppose the license transfer. Although he did not want to list names without having definite confirmation, Hart said two of those plan to attend the June 23 meeting of the Calvert County Board of License Commissioners, or Liquor Board, where the transfer hearing will take place.

“It could affect a lot of liquor stores across the area if they can get this into the big-box stores,” Carolyn said. “There are a lot of people forming to protest.”

Hart said he learned through a legal notice in the newspaper and after making some phone calls that Thomas McKay, co-owner of Woodburns, plans to open a Woodburns within the existing Food Lion store, and Hart is concerned that it might start a trend among other local chain grocery stores.

“If you’re married with kids, you’re rushing around, you’ve got to go get groceries and your husband calls and says, ‘Don’t forget Judy and Bill are coming over tonight. Pick up a bottle of wine with dinner,’” Hart said. “If you see a stack of beers sitting there while you’re shopping, are you going to pick it up? Yeah. ... And once that door is open, you’ll never close it.”

The competition of selling wine and beer in grocery stores could lead to the suffering of locally owned liquor stores and their employees, Hart said.

“Everybody’s agreeing this is wrong,” he said, citing Calvert County as a place that tries to keep out large chain stores, such as Super Walmart and Home Depot, as a means to support local businesses “because of the damage those places would do.”

To combat Woodburns coming to Food Lion, Hart hired an attorney, and he and his team plan to point out every discrepancy they can find at the liquor board hearing next week, he said, such as the lack of a signed approval of the landlord and no county residents listed on the liquor license.

McKay confirmed that he plans to lease space within the Food Lion and that the Woodburns in Solomons will not reopen due to financial hits during the recession. Once the details are worked out with Food Lion, it should open within 90 days of the license approval, he said, following renovations.
