Tennessee Smokies Unable to Hold Lead in 11-6 Loss to Lookouts Sunday
Leading for much of Sunday’s contest with the Chattanooga Lookouts, the Tennessee Smokies were unable to hold a three-run lead late and fell 11-6 to the Lookouts in front of 3,807 at Smokies Park. With the loss the Smokies finish the first half with a 43-27 record, which is best in the Southern League.Tennessee started off strong Sunday night as Junior Lake reached on an error, and moved to second on a walk to Marwin Gonzalez. Brett Jackson doubled to center, scoring Lake and putting runners at second and third. Gonzalez scored by a wild pitch by Lookouts starter Michael Antonini to put the Smokies up 2-1. Jackson, now at third, would later score on a Josh Vitters single to increase the Smokies’ lead to 3-1.
The Lookouts answered in the second inning. Matt Wallach walked and Antonini singled with two outs in the second, and both scored on Silverio’s second double of the game, tying the game at three.
In the third, Ryan Flaherty reached with a one-out single, and two batters later, Steve Clevenger drove him in with a double to left. Jackson and Flaherty did more damage in the fifth, ripping solo homeruns to extend the lead to 6-3.
Starter Robert Coello lasted four innings, allowing three runs on five hits while striking out three. He retired seven of the last eight batters he faced.
Reliever Kyle Smit would replace Coello, and tossed one scoreless inning and then gave way to Jeff Beliveau, who went two innings surrendering one run while striking out three. Kevin Rhoderick also pitched one inning and gave up one run.
Tennessee with a 6-5 lead and three outs from a win, the Smokies were unable to close it out in the ninth. Rafael Dolis was able to get the leadoff batter out and then surrendered four straight hits, including a three-run homerun. Dolis (4-4) lasted two-thirds of an inning giving up five runs on five hits and taking the lass. Josh Wall (2-1) picked up the win for Chattanooga.
The Smokies will take the next three days off for the Southen League All-Star Game being held in Jackson, Tenn. Eight Smokies players will be participating in the summer classic. The second half of the 2011 campaign will kick off on Thursday, June 23 in Birmingham, Ala. The Smokies will return to Smokies Park on Wednesday, June 28 for a six-game series with the Carolina Mudcats. Double-A Tennessee clinched its fourth straight North Division first-half title -- a Southern League record -- on Thursday afternoon with a 4-3, eight-inning walk-off win over the Chattanooga Lookouts.
The Smokies (42-25) have 21 wins at home and 21 wins on the road. Through their first 67 games, they lead the Southern League in ERA (3.55) and runs (374 or 5.58 per game) scored.
The club's skipper, Brian Harper, managed the San Jose Giants to a Cal League championship in 2010 before moving up to Tennessee. His new club grabbed another first-half title with flair, tying the opening game of the doubleheader in the seventh before winning it an inning later.
Facing a 3-2 deficit after six frames, Josh Vitters reached on a two-base error, advanced to third on Junior Lake's sacrifice bunt and scored on Ryan Flaherty's single.
Rebel Ridling, the first batter in the bottom of the eighth, won the game when he hit Scott Rice's second pitch over the right-field fence for his 10th dinger of the season.
Ridling, who also singled in a first-inning run, was the lone Smokies swinger to record multiple hits.
Smokies starter Brooks Raley matched counterpart Chris Withrow pitch for pitch. Both hurlers allowed two runs on four hits over five innings.
