Western themed resort hotel planned near DIA

Gaylord Entertainment and city of Aurora Officials announced that construction should begin on a Western-themed resort hotel mid-to-late 2012, which is estimated to cost around $800 million.  Hoping to be open in 2015, the resort will be located less than ten minutes from DIA and will cover 85 acres with 1,500 rooms and 400,000 square feet of exhibition and meeting space. 

What does this mean for the Denver Metro? It means approximately 1,800 new jobs in Aurora and new tourism from other states and countries.  According to Global Denver , Denver sees over 180,000 foreign tourists each year and with a location near the international airport, Denver's international visitors should increase every year.  According to an article by  Huffington Post , visitors spent $3.3 billion in 2010 and 3.5 million of overnight stays in Denver were business related.   

Gaylord Entertainment also has resorts that are business and meeting focused in Washington, D.C., Nashville, Orlando and Dallas.  Gaylord Entertainment chose the Denver Metro area because according to their research, this market was rated a top ten destination and has a high level of growth.  

Hensel Phelps Construction Co., a Colorado-based company, has been selected as the general contractor.  Gaylord Entertainment will be funding the majority of the project, but will receive help from the city of Aurora with tax incentives.  Aurora will collect most of the new taxes generated by the resort and reinvest them into the Gaylord Resort and Convention Center.

In a statement from the CEO of Gaylord Entertainment, Colin V. Reed, he said, “We are thrilled by the prospect of a Gaylord property in the Denver Market, which has fast become one of the most desirable tourist and business travel destinations in the United States and a destination of choice for meeting planners and conventions.”
