2011 World Pork Expo Draws Producers with a Business Focus

Business was brisk throughout the three-day 2011 World Pork Expo as nearly 20,000 people participated in the world’s largest pork-specific trade show June 8-10 in Des Moines, Iowa. Attendees also viewed business seminars, Pork Academy, the record-setting Junior National swine show and GRAMMY®-caliber musical entertainment while enjoying free pork. Brought to the industry by the National Pork Producers Council (NPPC), World Pork Expo attracted producers and exhibitors from Maine to Hawaii, and a total of 39 countries. “We heard optimism about marketing prospects along with healthy concern regarding the availability of affordable feed from the producers at World Pork Expo this year,” said Doug Wolf, NPPC president. “In fact, the forward-thinking nature of NPPC members was evident everywhere - from candid conversations over a pork sandwich to the standing ovation given to Korean Ambassador Han Duk-soo as he commented on the pending free- trade agreement. The interaction at Expo has never been better.”

World’s largest pork-specific trade show

The trade-show floor and outside exhibits were crowded throughout the Expo as attendees viewed displays from more than 400 exhibitors from 11 different countries. Expo exhibitors commented on the brisk activity, and the interest in learning about new products and services. “World Pork Expo is our highlight event of the year,” said Tom Stuthman, vice president of Automated Production Systems, headquartered in Assumption, Ill. “It gives international companies like us the ability to make contacts with customers and meet pork producers from throughout the world.”
Bill Shields, regional sales manager for PigTek, based in Milford, Ind., also talked about how Expo enables pork producers and companies to connect. “World Pork Expo provides face-to-face contact with existing and potential customers,” said Shields. “We are able to talk about long-range project planning with people from all over the world.”

International involvement

Beyond the exhibits, international participation was highlighted by the presence of Han Duk-soo, Korean ambassador to the United States. He headlined the Strategic Investment Program (SIP) Luncheon held Thursday and spoke to the media about the pending U.S.-Korea free-trade agreement.
Journalists representing four continents also were on hand to cover news and information presented during Expo.

The World Pork Expo opened Wednesday with about 20,000 individuals coming from around the world to see the latest live-stock machinery, practices and innovations.

“This is a unique show, it’s got a lot offer,” says Doug Fricke, director for tradeshow marketing for the National Pork Producers Council, which runs the yearly event. “We’re consistently evolving and trying to stay on cutting edge for our attendees so they have a great experience with the tradeshow.”

The show, held in Des Moines, Iowa, June 8-10, has show grounds that boast over 400 acres—the World Pork Expo occupies about two-thirds of that space. All in all, this exposition takes up over half a million square feet.

“We have just over 400 companies and those companies are from all over the world—China, Mexico, Canada, Spain, obviously the United States and South America,” Fricke says. “We’ve got over 600 spaces and some companies occupy 20 to 30 spaces by themselves. There are exhibits that are quite large, down to the 10 by 10 booths.”

Exhibitors are showing swine equipment within a variety of fields, including technology, computers and new products that aid producers with profitability and sustainability within the industry.

“We’ve got two major buildings—two of the largest exhibition halls on the site are filled to capacity,” he says. “There’s also outdoor exhibits and we’ve got hospitality tents which is something we’ve started seeing a big push for. It’s given a lot of these folks an opportunity to do more one on one and entertain their customers.”

This show’s attendee market is primarily based on members from the National Pork Producers Council from around the U.S. and internationally.

“The primary focus of this tradeshow is to showcase the industry and what’s new and what’s happening,” Fricke says. “This particular show is a world-class event when it comes to attracting the companies and the actual buyers—the primary audience is definitely key in attracting the high number of attendees.”

The show, which has been running for 23 years, used to reach out more a broader audience but now targets pork producers primarily.

“We’ve driven our messages through emails and direct contact and also through publications that are related to our industry,” he says.  “We work closely with the exhibiting companies—we ask the companies to actually invite their customers because that’s an important aspect to build their audience at the booths or the hospitality tent—we’ll tell them ‘Invite your customers and let them come see you.’ That has been very, very successful.
