What should have been the beginning of the end of the story turned out to be preamble, as Mocha ended up being diagnosed with Patent Ductus Arteriosus. Layman’s terms? Too much blood being pumped through the heart. Most puppies die within a few weeks of birth of an enlarged heart. Of the ones that make it, 60 percent die within the year. But with a simple surgery? Normal life. And the quicker the surgery is performed, the better the chances.

Working with the rescue is the Veterinary Specialty and Emergency Center (VSEC) in Langhorne, Pa. They’ve agreed to perform the surgery for roughly $4,000, including previous visits. That sum is simply more than the small rescue has available. Remember — when they took Mocha in, all they were expecting was a dog with a murmur. Not a dog who would die without expensive surgery.
