Bridge Co. to comply with Gateway Project deadline

Detroit — Officials from the Ambassador Bridge today said they would meet a court-ordered deadline to modify a disputed area of the $230 million Gateway Project.

The Detroit International Bridge Co., which operates the international crossing, said it will comply with plans that call for the DIBC to build an approach ramp and to move toll booths at the southwest Detroit bridge plaza before the Jan. 12, 2012 deadline.

The DIBC said it was also deeding over land it owned so the Michigan Department of Transportation could finish a ramp that would take traffic coming from Canada and directly link it to local freeways.

However, DIBC officials said the company was not removing fueling stations or tearing down a support structure known as "Pier 19," which is part of the company's plans for its own second span across the river.

According to DIBC attorney Reginald M. Turner, the company objects to the removal of the structures and is talking with MDOT.

"Despite our objections … we will comply with the orders of the court," DIBC President Dan Stamper said today at a press conference. "We continue to move forward with court-ordered construction in order to maintain progress and to get MDOT off our backs."

MDOT has accused the DIBC, which is owned by Grosse Pointe Shores billionaire Manuel "Matty" Moroun, of deviating from their original contract.

MDOT region engineer Tony Kratofil said today's announcement was good news, if not timely.

"It's encouraging that they are moving forward, but only if they follow through," Kratofil said. "The bridge company and Moroun have failed to honor the contract they entered of their own free will. We're glad they're transferring the property to us but it was supposed to have been deed years ago.

"We hope they follow through, but actions speak louder than words."

In February 2010 and January of this year, Wayne County Circuit Judge Prentis Edwards agreed with MDOT that the DIBC had failed to follow the projected and ordered the bridge company to make the adjustments.

But earlier this month, both sides were back before Edwards as MDOT asked the judge to fine the bridge company $100,000 a day for showing little progress in meeting the terms of the orders.

Edwards said then he was concerned at the lack of progress and would decide July 7 whether the bridge company should be penalized.
