Prodigy on the links finds unique way to give back

MONROE — Timothy Colanta has spent a lot of time in hotels.

The 14-year-old phenom has been golfing in tournaments across the nation since he was 5, sometimes in up to a dozen competitions a year.

But Timothy, the winner of more than 50 golf tournaments already in his young career, brought back more than just a trophy from many of these trips. He took the complimentary hotel soaps, shampoos and lotions as well.

Combined with his father Romel’s assortment of hotel toiletries, the Colanta family soon found they had a lot of little soaps, shampoos and lotions hanging around their Monroe house.

That’s when Timothy had an idea.

“I finally figured that instead of just having it sit around, I could give it out and make use of it,” Timothy said.

With the support of his family, the youngster started the Cleanliness and Godliness Project in January 2010, aiming to provide basic necessities of hygiene to those in need through unused hotel toiletries.

The project, whose name derives from a quote by Sir Francis Bacon, has already made two major donations to the Wounded Warrior Project and St. Vincent DePaul Society food pantry. The latter is run out of St. Bartholomew’s Parish in East Brunswick, where Timothy goes to school. Timothy next plans to work with the American Red Cross to provide packets of toiletries to tornado victims in Joplin, Mo., and Tuscaloosa, Ala.

“It’s just a way of giving back,” said Timothy, whose brother Ryan, 8, helps to pack the shampoos and soaps before they are sent out to different charities .

Romel Colanta, 49, said his son starting golfing even before he could walk. His wife, Wenilda, was playing in a tournament about a year after Timothy was born, when in the hotel room, Timothy got up, leaned himself against the sofa and golfed with a wooden club.

“He would take swings, fall down, get back up, swing and fall down again,” Romel said.

Romel would take his son to the driving range in the evenings, and soon Timothy wanted to start hitting the ball himself. He bought Timothy a set of clubs, and the two practiced together at the range.

“I fell in love with it,” Timothy said. “I’ve been going to the range as long as I can remember.

Timothy played his first tournament at age 5 in New England, where the family was living at the time. He played in his first national tournament at the Doral-Publix in Miami, where the then-6-year-old with four clubs faced 7-year-olds with 14 clubs who had years of experience under their belts.

Aldila's NVS helps Rex Hospital Open winner capture third title ...

POWAY, Calif. -- With the help of Aldila's NVS graphite shaft, the winner of the Rex Hospital Open captured his third career Nationwide Tour victory. He finished with a 14-under-270, which was good enough for a $99,000 first place check. With those earnings he moved into sixth place on the Nationwide Tour's money list. At the end of the season the Top 25 money leaders earn their PGA Tour card for 2012. Four other top 10 finishers at the Rex Hospital Open also played Aldila's shafts.

Led by their triple threat of patented shaft design technologies, "The Hottest Shafts In Golf" won the wood and hybrid shaft manufacturer counts at the FedEx St. Jude Classic, according to the Darrell Survey. Aldila obliterated the competition by having 34 more wood shafts in play than their closest competitor. With the double count win at St. Jude, Aldila has now won both shaft counts on the PGA Tour for 20 out of the past 22 weeks.

The latest of Aldila's patented shaft technologies, the RIP, was instrumental in helping the most accurate driver at the St. Jude Classic improve his driving accuracy. After switching to Aldila's RIP NV shaft in his driver, he finished the tournament with a 75 percent driving accuracy percentage, which was well ahead of the field's average of 56.94 percent.

RIP, Reverse Interlaminar Placement Technology, transforms the shaft from the inside out providing players with shot control. RIP shafts offer golfers lower torque, increased tip stability and better tip stiffness control. Aldila's two other leading shaft technologies are S-core and MLT. S-core or stabilized core technology, provides the golfer with stability through an innovative design incorporating a one-piece carbon fiber rib system. This helps the shaft stay more concentric during the golf swing thereby transferring maximum energy.

MLT, Micro Laminate Technology, is designed using ultra thin layers of premium aerospace graphite that are matched with a proprietary thin profile shaft design that eliminate 'dead zones' in the shaft for precise feel. Aldila's patented shaft design technologies provide the perfect balance of applied art and engineering. They are continually on the leading edge of the golf world through their relentless pursuit of the next best innovation. They do the experimenting so you don't have to. Pushing success to the edge and redefining how power should feel. Are you playing Aldila, or just graphite?

ABOUT ALDILA Aldila is publicly traded on OTCQX with the symbol ALDA and is the world's premier manufacturer of high performance graphite golf shafts, composite prepreg and carbon fiber arrows. Aldila engineers continually advance and redefine golf shaft technology. Since 1972, Aldila has led the graphite shaft industry with more patented technology, manufacturing and process innovation than any other shaft manufacturer. In 2010 Aldila was the #1 graphite shaft on Tour with more wood shafts in play and nearly twice as many hybrids as the next leading competitor, according to the Darrell Survey. Aldila was also the #1 graphite shaft in play during the 2010 FedEx Cup.
