Jackson Generals Swept in Double-Header by Carolina Mudcats to End Second-Half

The Jackson Generals dropped two games to Carolina Saturday to end the first half, losing game one 5-1 and game two 8-4. Kyle Seager finished the two games 5-for-7, with three doubles, a triple and one RBI. The Mudcats had lost 21 consecutive series coming into the series with Jackson, but snapped the streak taking four of five from the Generals. The Generals limp into the All-Star break losing eight of their last 10 games, finshing 38-32 in the first half.



Kyle Seager was 2-for-3 with a double and run scored to lead Jackson in game one. Mudcats leadoff hitter Denis Phipps paced the Mudcats by finishing 2-for-2 with three runs scored.

Aroldis Chapman (1-1) tossed two scoreless innings of relief to earn his first victory on his current rehab stint from Cincinnati. Chapman fanned three batters in the outing. Tom Wilhelmsen (2-2) suffered the loss giving up five runs over six innings.

The Mudcats took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning on a two out single by Neftali Perez. The Mudcats scored three runs in the third inning and went up 4-0.

The Generals sent their first and only run across in the bottom of the third inning. Kuo Hui grounded out, scoring Kyle Seager from third base. Carolina scored one more run in the top of the fifth, making the final 5-1.



In game two, Kyle Seager was 3-for-4 with a triple and two doubles. Seager now has 25 doubles on the year. Kuo Hui Lo hit his fourth homerun of the season. Denis Phipps and Henry Rodriguez had three hits in game two for Carolina while Felix Perez, Eric Campbell, and Kevin Coddlington had two hits each.

Anthony Vasquez (4-6) suffered the loss in the second game and Tim Gustafson (2-5) won for Carolina. Vasquez allowed seven runs on twelve hits in four and two thirds on the mound.

The Mudcats struck first in game two as well, scoring two runs on a sacrifice fly in the second inning by Kevin Coddlington and getting an RBI triple by Denis Phipps. Carolina took a 2-0 lead.

Carolina extended the lead to 5-0 with a three-run top of the third inning. Cody Puckett drove in two runs with a double and Felx Perez singled home the third run of the inning.

Jackson cut the edge to 5-2 with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third. Kuo Hui Lo homered and Kyle Seager drove in a run with one of his two doubles

Carolina added two more in the fifth and one in the seventh to go ahead 8-2 before the bottom of the seventh.

HUNTSVILLE, ALA. (June 13, 2011) – Huntsville won the finale of a five-game series Monday night, shutting out the Generals 2-0 at Joe Davis Stadium. The Generals stranded 11 runners on base and were 1-for-10 with runners in scoring position. The Generals fell to four games back in the division with five to play in the first half. Jackson ends their 10-game road trip with a 4-6 record.

Anthony Vasquez (4-5) suffered a tough luck loss Monday tossing eight innings and surrendering just two runs on six hits. Vasquez has gone at least 7+ in each of his last four starts. Vasquez struck out three and walked one. Huntsville starter Cody Scarpetta (3-3), the #4 prospect for the Milwaukee Brewers held the Generals scoreless over seven innings for the win. He struck out five and walked four. Jim Henderson retired the final out and was given his third save of the year.

Carlos Triunfel has four hits in his last two games after a 2-for-5 night Monday. Triunfel has upped his average to .292 after the road trip. Angel Gonzalez led Huntsville with two hits, including a double and scoring each of the Stars two runs.

The Huntsville Stars plated each of their two runs with two outs. In the bottom of the fifth frame Sergio Miranda singled in Angel Gonzalez to give Huntsville a 1-0 advantage. With two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning Martin Maldonado doubled in Gonzalez to increase their lead to 2-0.

The Generals enjoy a day off on Tuesday and begin the final series of the first half Wednesday against the Carolina Mudcats for five games in four days. Wednesday’s game time is set for 7:05 PM. RHP Erasmo Ramirez (6-3, 4.42) makes the start for the Generals against RHP Matt Klinker (2-4, 4.15) for the Mudcats.
