In fervent prayer for the spiritual leadership of the Cleveland Catholic Diocese
Recent articles pertaining to the Cleveland Catholic Diocese have given me more than the usual cause to stop, wonder and acknowledge my need to spend more time praying for the man who is supposed to give spiritual leadership to me and my fellow Catholics in this diocese.
According to reports, an invitation from the Greater Cleveland Congregations, formed to address the area's concern for education, jobs, health care and other social issues, received no response from Bishop Richard Lennon, other than an order to the area Catholic churches not to participate. I join Sister Mary Hurley, who wrote of her distress regarding this position (Letters, Wednesday).
Then stories regarding detailed allegations from several women, who reported being molested as schoolgirls by a former and now deceased pastor at St. Charles Borromeo Church in Parma, were reported. A parish building, named for the late pastor, displayed a plaque honoring him, which these women found offensive. Although the diocese has been paying for the treatment of one of the victims, it did not feel any action was necessary regarding the honoring plaque.
Thankfully, the St. Charles Parish Council and parish members did take action. The plaque and the pastor's name were removed from the building.
Then on Wednesday, Bishop Lennon told a gathering that the Catholic Diocese of Cleveland's kickoff of a $125 million capital campaign is "truly an historic effort."
As a Christian, I reflect in awe on Christ's crucifixion, an event that truly changed history. Christ commanded, "As I have loved you, so you also should love one another." His words are too often ignored, even in the very institution Christ initiated.
The long history of the Catholic Church bears witness to countless dedicated men and women of the faith that I am privileged to share. And many fine nuns, priests and lay members have blessed my life. However, I am increasingly convinced that the people of the Cleveland Catholic Diocese currently do not have a caring, loving, Christian shepherd.
I feel compelled to put this sad situation at the top of my prayer list.
Louise Seeholzer, Westlake
Louise Seeholzer of Westlake is not alone in her feelings about Bishop Lennon. Regarding St. Charles Parish, it is interesting that Pastor Carlin took immediate steps to solve the problem. That's leadership! Get rid of Lennon and make Carlin a bishop. Next, the "truly historic effort capital campaign" of $125 million. Do the accounting. The diocese is in deep doo-doo financially because of the priest scandal and exodus of Catholics who have had enough of meaningless sermons, awful music, happy-clappy liturgy and lack of leadership on a world-wide scale. So, donate to the capital campaign to cover expenses. That will leave the offertory money available for covering priest scandal costs. Our clergy lives in a make-believe world. I'd like to take my Catholic faith seriously. However, my Catholic education through college taught me to be an individual thinker. Our spiritual leaders prefer those who follow the church blindly. If that were not the case, area Catholics would have attended the Greater Cleveland Congregations event in spite of Richard Lennon's instructions to avoid the event.

Even defining the nature of this scandal is problematic; it is extremely difficult to distinguish here between what he actually did wrong, and what's merely a luridly gripping tabloid crucifixion of a guy exhibiting run-of-the-mill mongo-horniness.
