Plane lands on tracks: A small plane had to make an emergency landing on the railroad tracks in the middle of the town of Ridgeville over the weekend. The pilot managed to avoid businesses and homes near the tracks. A wing was bent when it hit lights at an intersection. There were no injuries. The plane had been pulling advertising banners, and the owner said it may have had engine problems.

Court says no: South Carolina’s high court Monday invalidated the Town of James Island’s attempt to incorporate into its own municipality. It was the third time the justices have thrown out James Island’s attempts to incorporate. The island on the edge of Charleston Harbor is a collection of subdivisions, shops and strip malls and home to about 20,000 people.

Judge is displeased: The judge in the murder trial of a Casey Anthony scolded prosecutors and defense attorneys Monday, warning them they may face punishment when the trial concludes, then he abruptly halted proceedings for the day to give both sides more time to sort out problems with witnesses. With the jury outside of the courtroom, Judge Belvin Perry said he was tired of the infighting.

Pension pay challenged: Florida’s statewide teachers union is taking the lead in a lawsuit that seeks to block a requirement that teachers, state workers and many local government employees contribute 3 percent of their pay to the state pension fund. The suit filed Monday also challenges a phase-out of cost-of-living increases in retirement benefits. The Florida Retirement System covers 655,000 active employees and provides benefits to 219,000 retirees.

Artwork on the loose: A bankruptcy trustee is searching for 80 pieces of artwork once owned by former 1Point Solutions CEO Barry Stokes, who died in federal prison last year after he was convicted in 2008 of bilking $19 million from his clients. About 2,000 pieces of his art collection have been sold for about $1 million. Bankruptcy trustee John McLemore said about 80 pieces remain missing, and he’s hoping to find them in good condition.

Recycling with a twist: In a novel recycling effort, tornado recovery volunteers in Apison — where eight people died in late April storms — are salvaging lumber, appliances and everything that’s reusable. Volunteers have started taking old appliances, furniture and wood in insured houses that were heavily damaged and beyond repair to give to uninsured homeowners. It’s a plan that some officials said is unique to Apison.
