Brian A. Snyder is no artist, and judging by his humor it’s hard to take his drawing technique seriously.

From when he was a child living in North Brookfield to when he studied at Syracuse University, Mr. Snyder would start each of his drawings by first making the shape of a butt. That’s right — butt as in the part of the body one sits on.

What was once a joke, however, has been turned into a company. Mr. Snyder’s Brooklyn, N.Y.-based Madbrook Publishing’s first project was to create a drawing book, “Everything Butt Art at the Zoo.” The book hit shelves of Barnes & Noble stores nationwide in May. A second book is on its way.

Mr. Snyder’s idea of starting every drawing with a butt began when he was a child and used to spend hours with the popular Ed Emberley’s step-by-step drawing books. Like Mr. Snyder’s “butt art,” the Ed Emberly books begin each drawing with various shapes.

“Being a funny kid, like I was, I thought it would be funny if they started with a butt,” said the 33-year-old Mr. Snyder. “I would do these characters in college over beers on cocktail napkins,” he added.

After earning his MBA from Boston University’s School of Management in 2009, Mr. Snyder was hired by IBM to work as an advisory client representative in New York. He and his family moved to Brooklyn. One day his 3-year-old daughter Madeline drew a person’s face. “It was the first time she drew something recognizable,” he said.

Mr. Snyder then showed Madeline butt art, and she loved it. He then asked himself, “Why shouldn’t we share this with the rest of the world?”

Soon after, Mr. Snyder called his best friend, David G. Markle, also from North Brookfield, and talked to him about the idea of turning butt art into a business. Keeping in mind that the iPad had just come out, Mr. Markle, a Worcester Polytechnic Institute computer science graduate, imagined an app for the idea and thought it could go big. “It really is a hook. It’s immediately engaging, the kids take to it right away, and they want to do it,” said Mr. Markle, chief technology officer and webmaster for Madbrook Publishing. He also serves as vice president of sales and marketing for his father’s company, Passports Inc., a provider for educational group travel based in Spencer. “The idea found us, as opposed to us finding it,” said Mr. Snyder. “We had a lot of ideas over the years but this one stuck.
