Perfect prom hair

Regis Salon hairstylists Theresa Lirette and Susan Wilson say that while traditional updos will always be in style, they are expecting to see more young ladies wearing their hair down and loose this year. It's a trend that started last year inspired by the hit television series The Hills.

"It's very romantic. And if they're wearing it up, it'll typically be to the side lull and loose,'' adds Susan who has been a hairstylist for the past seven years.

But Theresa says we can also expect to see loose curly styles this year which are almost always messy and undone. The salon manager says the decision to wear hair up and off the shoulders or down usually depends on the style of the dress.

"If the back of the dress is open or has a lot of embellishments, they usually want to wear their hair up to show it off,'' says Theresa who manages the Champlain Mall location of Regis Salon.

They feel most clients know exactly what they want when they come to the salon although there are always those looking for an expert opinion.

"Most come prepared with photos from the Internet or magazines but others are open to suggestions.''

With the royal wedding fresh on everyone's minds, the stylists feel some girls may opt for a more retro hairstyle this year similar like that worn by Duchess Kate on her big day.

"I think we're going to see more retro stuff," says Susan. "Big, loose finger waves. It's very 40's."

Although all the rage last year, Theresa says bang braids are not nearly as popular in 2011.Colored hair pieces, hair tinsel and feathers are being added to hair and while some young ladies avoid having haircuts the entire school year in anticipation of prom night, others get extensions put in to add length to their hair.

Many clients are adding color to their hair prior to putting it up in tight curls as a way of adding a little fun to their hair do. Red and copper tones are the most popular this season.

Meanwhile, accessories like headbands, shiny clips or small flowers are a great of adding a little pizzazz to shorter hair styles.

"They add sparkle in a different way. Even if they have short hair, they can do something special.''

Tiaras never go out of style but according to Theresa, the headband-styles are certainly more in style these days.

In preparation of the appointment, the hairstylists recommend that clients come in with clean and not day-dirty hair as was once the case.
