Toronto teen drowns near Stratford while swimming with friends

The last time Manu Sharma saw his friend, they were playing video games in a classroom, hiding from their teachers with the lights turned out.

A day later, Malcolm Gyamfi had drowned.

Gyamfi, a 14-year-old Toronto teen, was swimming with a group of young people in a pond just after 4 p.m. on Saturday at Hidden Acres Mennonite Camp, near Stratford, Ont.

Some members of the group went beyond the roped-off area into deeper water and the teen disappeared under the surface. Firefighters pulled him from the water.

Gyamfi was taken to Stratford General Hospital and then to London’s Victoria Hospital where he died about 11 p.m. Saturday.

Sharma, 14, remembers his close friend as an athletic teen with a knack for basketball. He was one of the best basketball players at Elia Middle School, where both boys attended, and often played at the YMCA. Sharma said Gyamfi would come up with inspirational quotes for his friends, connecting his life and world issues to basketball.

“Because he was so good at basketball, a lot of people thought that he wanted to be a basketball player when he grew up,” Sharma said. “But he didn’t want to be. He wanted to be just like his dad, an entrepreneur and a businessman that travelled all over the world.”

Sharma said Gyamfi was a popular kid with an occasional mischievous streak.

“He liked to speak out. He’s very athletic, he liked to run around. He used to talk a lot. He wasn’t a shy person,” Sharma said.

Hours after Gyamfi’s death, a 21-year-old Mississauga man died while swimming at a trailer park and resort in Port Colborne.

The second incident occurred at about 9 p.m. Saturday, when four visitors at the resort went swimming in an inland body of water, Niagara Regional Police say.

Police say the 21-year-old man jumped into the water from a height of up to six metres, surfaced and was talking with his companions. But a short time later, he slipped beneath the water and did not resurface.

His friends tried but were unable to find him. His body was found at 12:40 a.m. on Sunday by police divers.

Police are in the process of notifying family members and say alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the incident.

The fact remains that if two male virgins became a committed couple and wanted to donate blood, if they ever had sexual contact with each other they'd be precluded for the sake of bigotry. That's entirely unacceptable to me as a person, let alone a person that has several family members in a similar situation who would love to donate, but cannot.
