Elec Link to strengthen UK-France power links
The UK and France are to strengthen their power connections by means of a new 75km-long 500MW electricity cable, to be laid through the Channel tunnel’s service tunnel by 2015. The new high-voltage link will connect Sellindge in England, 14km away from the Eurotunnel’s Folkestone station, and Coquelles in France.
The Elec Link, in which Eurotunnel will invest around EUR250m with investment fund Star Capital Partners, will be open for power trading auctions. The joint-venture is 49%-owned by Eurotunnel and 51% by Star Capital Partners.
“Elec Link will further optimise the complementary nature of the two countries’ installed capacity and demand load as well as the development of more renewable energy,” the partners said in a statement.
Increasing renewable energy capacity has seen a growing fluctuation in output due to its intermittent nature and the new link is expected to help smooth out supply patterns between the two countries. Last month, the UK’s National Grid and the Dutch Tennet opened a new 1000MW power interconnector between the UK and The Netherlands.
The project is subject to regulatory approval from Ofgem and CRE energy watchdogs in both countries.
