Assurance Wireless Arrives in Kentucky; 353227 Residents to Benefit
Prepaid brand, has launched a new service in the state. Under the plan, Assurance Wireless will be providing free wireless phone and 250 free minutes of wireless voice service monthly to eligible customers in Kentucky.
The services will also include caller ID and access to 911 in case of emergency. Beyond the free 250 voice minutes, customers can choose from other options to pay for additional minutes, texting, international calling and more at competitive rates, Assurance Wireless announced in a press release.
According to an estimate, more than 211,600 Kentucky residents are currently without a job and more than 18.6 percent are living below the federal poverty line. Supported by the Lifeline Assistance program, Assurance Wireless gives eligible customers the ability to provide a contact number and return calls to a prospective employer, which can improve the chances of securing employment.
Using Nationwide Sprint Network, which reaches more than 275 million people, Assurance Wireless ensures that quality telecommunications services are available to low-income customers at reasonable and affordable rates. The service allows customers facing economic hardship to stay connected to potential employers, medical providers and child care-givers, at an affordable cost.
“We look forward to providing this same type of assistance to eligible Kentuckians who need support and resources during, what continue to be, rough economic times for many,” said Grace Boehm, director for Assurance Wireless, in a press release.
“I was unemployed for an extended amount of time due to layoffs,” said Evan M., an Assurance Wireless customer. “The free phone and service I received from Assurance Wireless was invaluable to my finding new employment and to my efforts to recover from this recession. It allowed me to contact potential employers and provide a way for them to respond to me, while also saving money needed to provide for my family. Assurance also gave me peace of mind that I had a way to stay connected to my kids while away from home.”
It should be noted that customers eligible for Assurance Wireless include those who participate in Medicaid, Food Stamps/SNAP, Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF), Supplemental Security Income (SSI), Federal Public Housing Assistance (Section 8), Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) and/or National School Lunch Program's Free Lunch Program. Supporting documentation is required to prove eligibility.

New SSD and SSI benefits will be paid by direct deposit ...
The U.S. Department of the Treasury has announced that new applicants to Social Security benefits and other federal benefits will need to sign up for electronic payment of those benefits. People can no longer opt to receive their benefits through paper checks; they must receive them through direct deposit. People who are already receiving Social Security benefits, disability benefits or other federal benefits will have until March 1, 2013 to switch to direct deposit.
Direct deposit can be a more convenient way to receive payments because you don't have to bring your check to the bank to get it cashed. It is also available more quickly, with less processing time. Direct deposit is also a safer way to send and receive disability benefits and other federal benefits.
According to a press release by the U.S. Department of the Treasury, more than 540,000 Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and Social Security paper benefits checks had to be replaced after they were reported stolen or lost in 2010. This obviously costs the taxpayers money.
On Tuesday, the Treasurer of the U.S., Rosie Rios, wrote a ceremonial check to the nation's taxpayers for $1 billion. The U.S. Department of the Treasury says that over the next ten years, $1 billion will be saved by U.S. taxpayers because of the switch from paper checks to direct deposit payment of federal benefits.
The U.S. Department of the Treasury said that it costs 92 additional cents when the government mails a paper check, as opposed to sending that check electronically.
