Local Collision Repair Shop Helps to Preserve the Ground Zero Steel
Jay Dolan, proprietor of International Collision Center , never really thought that one day he would play a big role in the restoration of a town memorial. Dolan is a master of his craft – collision repair. With his credentials, his business ties and community ties, he found himself playing a part in the restoration of the Ground Zero steel that will be used for the coming 9-11 Memorial.
The 9-11 Memorial Fund Committee recently purchased steel from Ground Zero to be used for their new Acton 9-11 Memorial , due to be completed on the 10 anniversary of September 11, 2001 – and placed outside in front of the Acton Public Safety building.
A major issue that has come up with the committee was how they were to go about preserving the steel throughout the various New England weather conditions. They want to preserve the original rust on the steel and make sure it does not continue to rust while it is outside on display.
That’s where Dolan comes into play.
9-11 Memorial Fund Committee member, Jon Stackhouse, actually ran into Dolan for a separate issue and approached him with the offer to test some coats of paint/polyurethane to maintain the original rusty steel.
According to Tom Matthews, 9-11 Memorial Fund Committee member, Dolan was glad to help.
“I actually had a rusty piece of steel left over from a job and we gave it to Jay to have him do a test run and it actually came out pretty good and everyone on the committee liked it,” said Matthews.
The Process:
Dolan contacted a business associate of his named Joe Gouveia, from Pine Motor Parts, to get his advice and assistance on the best type of paint/polyurethane that would preserve the steel.
It was important that the coat of paint would be clear, lasting and not shiny.
“We tested a bunch of different urethanes to cover the steel and basically we were trying to find a clear coat that doesn’t look shiny,” said Gouveia. “It was important for the steel to look like its original rust-look, but we don’t want it to be affected by water or anything like that.”
Dolan and Gouveia were successful in finding the right type of coat and will begin the process of coating the steel shortly.
