Boy Scout Troop 361 takes journey to New Mexico adventure camp
Welcome home, Boy Scout Troop 361 members Danny Schofield, Daniel Pomeranz, Alec Font, Tim Lieberman, Michael LeRoy, Stephen Watson, Paul Watson, Luke Bosley, Josh Merrihew and Troop leaders Steve Merrihew, Gavin Watson and John Bosley.
The group recently returned from a trip to New Mexico's Philmont Scout Ranch, the Boy Scouts of America 's largest national high-adventure base. Situated in the Rocky Mountains, the camp is about 214 square miles of rugged wilderness terrain and steep mountains tops.
Over the course of 12 days, the Scouts and troop leaders hiked a strenuous 82 miles, visiting 10 camp sites. Their journey took them rappelling, rock climbing, shotgun shooting and branding. Their itinerary also included a chuckwagon dinner and breakfast, gold mine tours, gold panning and lessons on conservation and archaeology including a visit to the world's only T-Rex dinosaur tracks.
"It was really cool to be there," said Scout Stephen Watson, who was making his second trip to the Philmont Ranch.

Veterans Elementary School is hosting summer play dates for incoming kindergartners on the school playground. It's a great way for new students and parents to meet before school starts. Siblings are welcome. The next play date is Wednesday, July 27 at 6:30 p.m.

Review: Iron & Wine at the 40 Watt | The Red and Black
A bearded man with a fine, crisp white shirt and a black jacket played to an overflowing audience at the 40 Watt, leading an orchestration of 11 musicians beneath glittered, cutout stars and an array of flashing lights.
He belted out his passions with closed eyes, clinching a cherry red electric guitar while layers of keyboard, trumpet, drums, saxophone, bass, guitar, female harmonies and percussion swirled through songs of up-beat jazz, ’70s reinterpretation rock and mature, adult-oriented pop music.
Though constant cheers and hollers erupted from the lively and joyous crowd, this wasn’t a Friday night spectacle performed by an in-again-out-again jam band.
It was just a Monday.
And despite the full, boisterous instrumentation and beautiful melodies emitted from the stage, this wasn’t a 12-man ensemble with a penchant for massive arenas and 24-hour continuous radio play.
It was Iron & Wine.
Lead by folk-rock singer-guitarist Samuel Beam, Iron & Wine’s one-man-band was at maximum capacity Monday night, tearing through infused songs that only hinted at the indie acoustic guitar and banjo driven music of its past.
Fans who tuned out on Beam’s growth and experimentation as a musician since 2002’s “The Creek Drank the Cradle” — which was recorded using a four-track mixer at his home — were probably caught in shell shock. Gone is the soft-spoken man who built his career off sweet and meaningful lyrics over finger-plucking acoustic guitar.
The night opened with “Me and Lazarus,” featuring the aged, rustic guitar sound that made Beam an indie sensation. The song quickly evolved with a trio of women singing harmonies to his right and a saxophonist (with the second biggest beard on stage) momentarily stealing the lime light with frilly, exuberant playing.
Dipping farther back into his discography, Beam and company played “Freedom Hangs Like Heaven” from the 2005 EP “Woman King.” With the staged blacked-out and soft red and purple lights shining out to the sides of Beam, the song sounded confident, with a washy, repetitive hi-hat keeping the beat over the plucking of a guitar.
The undisputed highlight of the evening — the crowd’s clamor was deafening — came from the monstrous crescendo of digitized space sounds on a blacked-out stage. A whiney, ’80s style synth was accompanied with an aside saxophone solo, which was nearly drowned out by the building bass-drum duo. Layer upon layer it folded over itself, before exploding into a single, unified jam session.
