Crime fought with Night Out
VALPARAISO | Sirens blaring, the caravan of Valparaiso police cars roared into the Essex Park neighborhood Tuesday night.
Officers weren't responding to an emergency. Instead, their mission was to get better acquainted with residents as part of National Night Out.
The nationwide initiative is designed to unite police and residents in the fight against neighborhood crime and drug use.
By encouraging interaction, the event helps adults and children feel more comfortable working with police to prevent crime.
Rachel Dec brought her 4-year-old son, Cameron. She said he became excited when he heard the police were coming.
"He's been talking about it all day," she said. "I just think it's a great way for us to show support for the Valpo police."
And what does Cameron think after seeing the police?
"They're cool," he said.
Rick Suriano and his daughter, Lilly, 3, had the chance to meet police dogs Britta and Cairo.
"She went straight for the dogs," Rick said. "(This event) shows the Valpo Police Department really cares about the community."
Jim Whited and his children Lily, 12, Ben, 8, and Julia, 5, were among the last to leave the gathering.
Whited said he told his children the reason for the evening was to "show the police are our friends and here to help us."
"They are smiling, happy people. They're not anyone to be scared of," he said he told them.
Police Chief Michael Brickner said the officers at the event included members of the canine team, bicycle unit, patrol unit, detective division and the school resource officer. Several family members of officers also participated, he said.
This year marks the eighth year Valparaiso has participated in National Night Out, and officers planned to visit a total of 10 neighborhoods, police Sgt. Michael Grennes said.
"We have a lot of new neighborhoods this year," he said.
Stops included High Sierra, Lexington Green, Central neighborhood, Pine Creek, the 1100 block of Napoleon, Villa on Vale Park, Meridian Woods, Campbell Meadows and Oak Grove.
