Bloodbath as Murdoch Gang tears itself apart

Ross Kemp, the first husband of Rupert Murdoch's fallen British chief Rebekah Brooks, won a Bafta award for his Sky TV investigations into violent gangs around the globe from Jamaica to London, taking in Bulgaria, Moscow and South Africa.

The tongue- in-cheek speculation in London salons this weekend is when will the former EastEnders star get around to making a documentary about the Murdoch Gang?

For the antics of Sun King Rupert, heir-apparent James, flame-haired Rebekah, son-in-law Matthew 'Dark Arts' Freud, Andy Coulson, Neil 'Wolfman' Wallis, not to mention departing Scotland Yard Commissioner Sir Paul 'Champneys' Stephenson and the dead whistleblower Sean Hoare are surely the stuff of soap opera.

For more than two weeks Hackingate has dominated the news agenda here, nudging aside the dire international economic crisis and dying soldiers in Afghanistan.

The day before Murdoch departed from Luton on his private jet for New York last Wednesday, millions of TV viewers were glued to the live inquisition of Rupert, his son James and Rebekah Brooks in front of the House of Commons select committee for culture, media and sport. Under interrogation a confused and seemingly baffled Murdoch, dubbed 'an old 80', described the experience as the most humble day of his life. His son's robotic testimony has triggered a referral to the police where his early knowledge of the scale of hacking at the News of the World could lead to a charge of perverting the course of justice.

Murdoch Snr barely noticed when his feisty wife Wendi kung-fu slapped comedian Jonnie Marbles as he tried to throw a plate of foam over the News Corp tycoon. The immoral and illegal telephone eavesdropping by Sun King Rupert's minions at the News of the World has mushroomed into an international scandal which threatens the future of a prime minister, has destroyed the career of at least three police chiefs, a pair of Murdoch's most trusted executives and hundreds of journalists. In addition it has triggered big circulation dips in Murdoch's Sun, Times and Sunday Times.

It has also exposed Murdoch, sabotaging his political influence in Britain. There will be no more back-door visits to Downing Street. And, apart from the loss of $1bn in News Corp's share price, the drama has greatly diminished his reputation in the US where his Fox News channel and Wall Street Journal set the news agenda.

How did it come to this? Less than a month ago Rupert was holding court in the refined greenery of Holland Park's Orangerie where the News International summer party was held. David and Samantha Cameron raised a champagne toast to Rupert accompanied by a preening and supplicant Labour Party leader Ed Miliband with his shadow chancellor Ed Balls.
