Anti-Pebble ads fail the geography test
I would be the last person in the world to threaten the Bristol Bay fishing sockeye salmon, the largest wild salmon fishery in existence. I started fishing in the Ugashik River in 1950 and made money to buy my first machine, then begin my airline, which of course grew up to be successful to support the fishing industry. To date, my children and grandchildren are counting on Bristol Bay to help support themselves and their subsistence needs.
However, the latest TV campaign by the anti-Pebble group is ridiculous. They use a half-dozen area residents of Chignik / Perryville (some of which are my parents) to speak against the mine, as if they are residents of Bristol Bay.
Look at a map. Chignik area is on the Pacific side of the peninsula of Alaska, nearly 1,000 miles from the Bristol Bay by water. The sockeye fishery Chignik Lake is the second in the state, near Bristol Bay. It is much more similar, but larger than, the Copper River, Cook Inlet and producers of Kodiak Island, all at least in the same ocean.
As anyone familiar with the life cycle of sockeye knows they are hatched in early spring and spend the first year of growth for salmon in rivers and lakes. Then they go to sea for two or three years of growth, then return to their point of origin to spawn.
The tracks always return to their place of creation to start the cycle again. Thus there is no way any disaster in Bristol Bay Chignik may affect the operation, and vice versa.
Let's look at the facts.Apparently, there are very large, valuable mineral deposits in the western hills of Illiamna. In the worst cases, such as a dam break or leak toxic materials continues, it could be two systems affected, the side of the creek Talarik Illiamna Lake and River Nushagak Mulchatna on the side.
These two streams together support only a very small percentage of the total breeding operation. The vast majority of the race back Nushagak Rivers Nushagak and timber systems for Aleknagik / Tikchik lakes, and the vast majority of the race will Kvichak east and parts of northern Illiamna Lake and Lake Clark. And of course, systems Naknek, Egegik and Ugashik are even more removed. It is inconceivable that any major disaster in a small watershed area would impact the entire run.

New Poll: Bristol Bay Commercial Fishermen Near Unanimous in ...
The Bristol Bay region revealed that an overwhelming majority - 85 percent - oppose the controversial proposal of Pebble Mine.
In addition, a nearly unanimous 96 percent believe the source of the Bristol Bay should be protected for future generations. The survey, conducted by the nonpartisan research firm Craciun, 350 respondents or 10% of the holders of commercial licenses who live in, director of Bristol Bay Regional Seafood Development Association. "The proposed Pebble threaten thousands of well-paying jobs that are essential to the regional economy and the state."
The survey also found that 77 percent of respondents do not believe the Pebble Mine and fishing can co-exist safely.
The proposed Pebble Mine - a partnership of tribes and commercial fishermen asked the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to use its authority under the Clean Water Act to restrict or prohibit the storage of tailings in the crystalline waters of Bristol Bay. In February 2011, EPA announced that it has undertaken an assessment of the watershed to assess the relevance of large-scale mining in Bristol Bay.More information about the actions of the EPA in Bristol Bay can be found here.
Bristol Bay Regional Seafood Development Association represents nearly 2,000 small businesses (fishermen) and their 5000 crew fishing in Bristol Bay.
