Inside-the-park homer lifts Trahan, X's
SIOUX CITY - Sioux City Explorers and Sioux Falls, pheasants had exchanged one unearned run each in a game that had no purpose until the bottom of the sixth inning.
Then with two outs in the seventh half the home, Wally Backman Jr. came through a dramatic difference maker at the wheel of a three-run inside-the-Park Homer spent immersed in Abercrombie Reggie center-left.
The few 120-yard sprint for Backman, following teammates Ryan Priddy and Dustin Jones, gave the explorers a much needed 4-1 victory that kept it from being erased American Association playoff hopes on a cool evening in August at Lewis and Clark Park.
"I knew that Reggie would have a chance for him, he has such good closing speed,''said Backman, namesake of the popular baseman, second on the 1986 World Champion New York Mets. "When it happened to him, I knew that Stan (Cliburn, X manager, the coaching third base) would send me because he is aggressive.''
"I was very talkative, I will not lie,''said third baseman of X, his red uniform top of sliced almost half of its slide at the plate.
It was the first inside-the-Parker ever for 25 years Portland, Ore., native, helping X starter David Trahan pick up a victory in a pitchers' duel with the Pheasants "Kyle Ruwe.
With only 10 games left on the calendar, explorers, 46-44, moved within four games of Central Division leaders Gary, now 50-40 after Homer Juan Richardson walk-off three points in the ninth inning lifted the second Wichita, 49-41, in a 8-6 victory over the Railcats Friday night.
X are also only three games in the race for the single parent wild-card berth in the league, which above all Wichita St. Paul slipped one game behind after losing 8-1 to Fargo-Moorhead left Saints stumbled to their seventh consecutive loss.
Trahan, improving to 3-0 in four starts since rejoining the team after pitching the last six weeks of the season in the Mexican League, had a pinch-hitter through the first six innings. Abercrombie, a major leaguer with the Rays and Astros, hit single with two out, first inning single.
Apart from a 1-0 defeat June 16 at Lincoln, in a game decided in the bottom of the ninth, it was the longest of any opponent and explorers had disappeared without running when Backman led down to the sixth, reaching a throw past first baseman Mark Shorey.
Derek Schermerhorn Backman bunted to second and Kent Sakamoto second of two strokes off the link to the contest without a goal.

High schools, of course, are not as well equipped as a professional theater the size of the 5th Avenue Theatre and Seattle Repertory, but the group has learned to use creatively what they have on hand, such as using mirrors and angles to complete a tight room with projections. The last day of the workshop, participants learned to manage a moment of rapid change, running a high school in Abernathy's grandfather, and make the Wizard of Oz sound bigger than life. They also received advice on the organization of their stock of costumes, different techniques for applying makeup, and even more techniques to get makeup stains from clothes.
