GREENarama Saves Energy with Style
Being an offical eco-geek, I was excited to visit Columbia-Tusculum’s GREENarama, a home show featuring all LEED-certified homes, built to maximize energy efficiency and minimize impact on the environment. I was expecting to see lots of bamboo floors, recycled glass counters and dual flush toilets. While there were a few examples of the standard green decorating ideas, most of the houses were built green without being too obvious about it, making them much more appealling and accessible to what I imagine is the typical high-end homeshopper.
Half of the over $400,000 homes built for the show have already sold, a price tag made much more reasonable by the 15 year property tax abatement. That’s right, the owner of the home does not pay property tax on the value of the built structure (up to $500,000) for 15 years! The geothermal heating and cooling systems installed below the buildings mean that heating and cooling costs can be reduced drastically depending on the owner’s temperature preferences. So even though the purchasers of these new homes are paying a hefty price, they will be saving almost $200,000 in property taxes and energy costs in the first 15 years!
