Fire camp crews provide huge support service for Alaska firefighters

“We’re all cogs that make the machine run,” said Karl Meitzner with a grin, interlocking the curled fingers of each hand to mimic a gear. Slim, wiry muscled and deeply tanned, Karl is lord of the supply area. As supply unit leader, it’s his job to make sure that crews are supplied with everything from hose fittings, fuel pumps, coolers, food, clothing, bug dope and even lime for their outhouses. “I love it. I take a day off when I have to but I can’t stay away too long,” said Meitzner. He stood in the middle of his domain, a large clearing fringed with tents of various sizes and shapes and filled with the high-pitched beeping tones made by forklifts as they trundled back and forth. Across the road from the supply area is the helibase, where helicopters periodically swoop in to pick up another load of supplies from the staging area or water from a nearby gravel pit. Next door to the supply area is the ground support unit, which provides vehicles such as 4-wheelers and pickup trucks to firefighters and support staff as needed. Orders are called in to the supply unit from the crews themselves, a system that eliminates the middleman and ensures that orders are filled quickly and accurately. Dorothy, a snowy-haired, cheerful lady, runs the order tent with her two eager young trainees, Lily and Gary. They fill out order forms and give them to the crew, which assemble the requested item on pallets and load them onto cargo nets to be helicoptered out to the firefighters. The supply area is filled with everything a firefighter could need out on the line. A fuel section holds large cans of pre-mixed gas and oil for chainsaws and pumps, unleaded gas for 4-wheelers and aviation gas for airboats. Cook kits containing a cook pot, coffee pot, frying pan, cook stove, utensils and a gallon of fuel are stacked next to boxes containing hose fittings. Stacks of coolers fill row after row of pallets. Gatorade and juice packets are popular items with the firefighting crews, as are the fresh-food boxes. These are sent out once every three days and contain four New York Strip steaks as well as pasta, sandwich makings, hot dogs and other camp foods. Since the crews immediately eat the steaks and spend the next two days subsisting on what is left, “every third day is steak night,” said Meitzner. Wow, amazing that so few people have posted here, praising and thanking these people.

The Western Firefighter shirt is a dress style shirt, with a western-style yoke in the back.  The western-style shirt has a front placket using decorative buttons and hidden snap fasteners for the closure to allow for quick removal.  The shirt has two large double-stitched chest pockets with pocket flaps and a pencil slot in the left pocket, pocket flaps have hook and loop closure with decorative buttons.  A badge tab with 1” eyelets  is over the left chest pocket. The western-style shirt has two military creases on the front of the shirt and three military creases on the back of the shirt, along with the western-style yoke.  The shirt will have set-in long sleeves with a snap cuff closure or set-in short sleeves.  The shirttail length shall be proportionate to the shirt size and long enough to allow a member to raise their hands above their head and have the shirttail remain in the trousers.  The shirt will be finished with the autoclave process to ensure the best appearance retention over the life of the garment.

2.         ) fabrics meet the performance requirements of NFPA 1975-1999 Standard for station/work uniforms for fire and emergency services.  NFPA 2112-2001,  Standard for Flame-Resistant Garments for Protection of Industrial Personnel Against Flash Fire.  These garments meet or exceed the requirement of OSHA Standard 1910.269:  “Electric Power Generation, Transmission, and Distribution; Electrical Protective Equipment (Maintenance Standard)”, Federal Register, Volume 59, No. 20, and CAL/OSHA General Industry Safety Orders (GISO), Title 191A, Method 5903.1.  (Please note: many garments have not undergone a formal certification process.  Please check with Workrite for certification status of specific styles and colors)

The following arc ratings apply to these garments:

a.       Fabric:

The shirt shall be manufactured with Nomex®IIIA fabric made from Du Pont Nomex®IIIA fiber.  The fabric will be treated with a wickable finish to enhance absorbency and improve comfort.

b.      Findings

The thread size shall be 45/3 or equivalent to ensure adequate seam strength and garment integrity.  The color of the thread will match the fabric.  The thread for seaming and stitching shall conform to MIL-T-43636.

Buttons used on the shirt will be made of molded polyester, size 24 ligne.

The snap fasteners shall be heavy-duty industrial grade made of solid brass with nickel plating.  All snaps shall be applied such that no metal from the snaps can be in contact with the skin.
