Question: When one child reaches a milestone or is getting extra attention for an achievement how do you deal with the other child's possible jealousy?
Answer From Momʼs Councilmember Kristy O'Connor (mother of 2):
Having a new baby in the house I've seen jealousy arise in my oldest daughter. Whenever anyone fusses over the baby my oldest practically throws herself over her baby sister and gives her hugs and kisses. Although it seems sweet, I can see she's doing it in a way to block the person from seeing the baby. When this happens I just acknowledge her and praise her for being such a loving big sister. This instantly puts a big smile on her face and she opens up to allowing the person to gush over the baby. Doing this seems to be an easy fix but there are other times when her jealousy breaks my heart.
Whenever I'm nursing the baby my oldest tries to climb all over me and practically sit on my lap. When I tell her she needs to give me and the baby space she gets so upset and will sometimes start yelling at me. When this happens I make her sit in timeout and explain to her that the baby and mommy need to be comfortable so the baby can eat.
I feel like there's a lot of heart-to-heart talks going on in my house. For our family it seems like the best thing to do when dealing with jealousy is to acknowledge it right away and talk to our daughter about her feelings and explain that everyone needs special one-on-one time. I try not to tell her she needs to share me with her sister because I feel like that will only make the jealousy stronger. So far it seems to be working and I'm grateful her jealousy hasn't turned ugly.

Perhaps its jealousy, an inferiority complex or just some kind of evil streak present in all of us; but we can't seem to get enough of seeing people that are wealthier, more talented and more famous than us fall from grace.

How To Deal With Jealousy - Emotional Times
To learn how to deal with jealousy.
If for no other reason than the fact that my life was coming to a standstill. I couldn’t seem to do anything except to be stuck in the jealous thoughts that the woman I was with was cheating on me. Looking back now, it was a sad, pathetic time and I did not handle it well.
In fact, when she got pregnant, I demanded she get an abortion. And that was the most excruciatingly painful experience I’ve ever been through, and I came awful close to killing myself over it. And it would be about twenty years before I could forgive myself. Considering how horribly painful it was for me, I couldn’t even imagine the pain I must have caused her.
I felt like a murderer for decades. All because I didn’t know how to deal with my jealousy. Today, life is quite different. I was finally able to forgive myself, and now I don’t feel jealous at all. Or, if I were to feel it, then I would just embrace the essence of it, and then let it go.
What changed?
Back in those cold dark days I was functioning out of my ego . And my ego was constantly telling me stories about what this other woman was up to. In my case, they were complete and utter lies. She wasn’t cheating on me. It was all in my head. I mean, I was so sick at the time that I would actually follow her around. And that’s hard to admit even now…
Jealousy In RelationshipsNow, she was a flirt. And pretty good looking. But I went way overboard because I had no confidence in myself.
It’s interesting to look at the dynamics of jealousy in relationships… because it really does ‘take two to tango’ – as the saying goes.
If you’re jealous, how much is the other person really doing to make you jealous?
Either they’re doing absolutely nothing, or very little (in my case), or maybe they’re outright trying to make you jealous. But here’s the problem:
We get stuck in what they’re doing (or not doing) and we end up completely ignoring and disrespecting ourselves. We focus all our attention on the other person. And when we do that, we give our power away.
We think they’re disrespecting us. Maybe they are; maybe they aren’t. But that’s not even the point. We’re disrespecting ourselves. That’s the real issue.
