Free laptops for 15 needy children

FOR years, student Nuraisyah Salleh had to vie with three siblings and six nieces and nephews to use the only desktop computer in their family's five-room Marine Parade flat.

"My sisters and brothers kept using our computer, and I didn't get the chance to use it any time I wanted," she said. It often left her envious of classmates, who had their own laptops to work on.

Nuraisyah, now 14, has a laptop of her own, thanks to the Children are Our Hope for the Future campaign held in conjunction with this year's Singapore National Family Celebrations.

The thrilled Secondary 2 student at Damai Secondary School said she will use the laptop to do her homework and play games online.

This year's campaign – helmed by the Grand Mercure Roxy Hotel and Marine Parade Citizens Consultative Committee (CCC) – hoped to help needy families and their children afford an education and meet some basic necessities.

Along with Nurai- syah, other children from low-income families were given Compaq laptops. They were picked by the Marine Parade CCC based on their overall grades, which were above 70 per cent.

Emeritus Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong, who was the guest of honour, handed out the laptops at a dinner last night at the Grand Mercure Roxy Hotel for 70 low-income families living in the constituency.

Mr Goh dined with the families and enjoyed performances put up by children.

The dinner was held to celebrate the closing of the campaign, which involved a car-wash fund-raiser last month.

The proceeds of $31,000 went towards the dinner and laptops. In addition, 50 other children each received $200 of cash and vouchers.

Mr Dominique Albero, general manager of Grand Mercure Roxy Hotel, said personal laptops were chosen as gifts because the organisers "wanted to see a big smile from the kids", and hoped they will help the children achieve their dreams and aspirations.

"Children must not be deprived of the little things in life," he said.

The free laptop was a joy for Primary 6 pupil Ow Yun Xi. The 12-year-old, who studies at Tao Nan Primary School, comes from a single-parent family.

"It will help my mother, as she won't need to work so hard (to buy me one) and will feel less stressed," she said with a smile.
