Wooden gators hit the bayou for a good cause

She was working to prepare a booth downtown at the first Great Gator Race fundraiser for Project Learn La-Terre and Friends of the Bayou.

“I didn’t like to read until the seventh grade,” said Deniger, 63, a former newspaper journalist who lives in Abita Springs. “A teacher got a hold of me and changed that.”

At least 200 other people joined Deniger, who published her first book “Salty Seas and his Heroic Friends” in 2009, at Saturday’s event.

Project Learn La-Terre is a nonprofit that provides GED classes and literacy programs, along with community outreach and health fairs.

John Silver, a volunteer coordinator at the Dulac Community Center, said the nonprofit has proved invaluable for residents along Bayou Grand Caillou by providing books and a teacher for GED classes. Having the classes in Dulac helps the adult students feel more comfortable, said 31-year-old Silver.

“They’re really good partners with us,” he said.

Music, food, crafts and a silent auction for books were all available during the day and into the evening. Several cast members from the History Channel’s “Swamp People” were also on hand to sign autographs and take pictures.

The pinnacle of the day, though, was the toy-gator race in Bayou Terrebonne. More than 1,000 wooden gators were launched into the bayou in several heats to race to a finish line a few yards away. Water hoses from a Houma Fire Department truck helped push the little 16-inch-long gators along.

As of Saturday afternoon, the winner hadn’t been announced. But whoever the lucky person is will receive a five-day cruise for two.

Kitty Maronge, a 65-year-old from Houma, purchased three of the little gators for each of her grandchildren.

“I just like to support the community,” she said, carrying the carved toys in her hands.

Wetlands education is a major reason New York author Paul Rodriguez became involved with planning the Project Learn La-Terre event. His book “Goldysocks and the 5 Bayous” is the foundation for an entire educational program he provides in New York.

The kids there love to see how different, but also similar, Louisiana’s coast is to their own.

Among his contributions to Saturday’s fundraiser were coloring sheets for kids to use in a contest. The theme: Getting kids to express what they care about.

Persons whose I-485s have been pending at the INS for 180 days or longer are ordinarily eligible to transfer to a new employer without abandoning their I-485 Adjustment of Status Application. The rules surrounding the 180 Day Portability are new and can be complex. However, the Portability rule can provide great relief to employees who are concerned that future lay-offs or Reductions In Force may cause their permanent Residency Applications to fail. Because of several liberalized I-485 rules, it usually a poor choice to opt for Consular Processing. Each consulate has its own nuances. Most U.S. Consulates require police certificates for all applicants 16 years or older covering all periods that they have resided in a foreign country. This requirement does not exist in the case of adjustment of status. The consular officers also require a certified copy of any military records, whereas this is not required in adjustment of status applications.
