High school student takes top honors at LSAG show

CAL artists earn 32 awards at 2011 LSAG Convention Show

Competing among 19 other art leagues in one of the largest annual southeast Texas art competitions, Conroe Art League (CAL) artists won 32 awards at the May 20-21 Lone Star Art Guild (LSAG) convention show. Since only those pieces of art which had won awards at previous league shows over the past year were allowed to enter the competition, this year’s winners are truly the “best of the best” for 2011.

Artists from the Conroe Art League won six first-place awards; four second-place awards; five third-place awards and 17 honorable mention awards.

CAL’s first-place winners for 2011 included: Vicki Nash for her photograph, “Reflection;” Sandra Little for her acrylic abstract painting, “Night Flight;” Maggie Gutierrez for her repoussé sculpture, “Hermanas;” Carol Berger for her ceramic vase, “Taupe on Sienna;” Linda Ormond for her reed work sculpture, “Fancy That;” and Amelie Godfrey for her abstract acrylic painting, “Move Over Jackson Pollock.”

CAL winners of second-place awards included: Golda Radar; Carol Berger; Linda Ormond; and Ann Blackmer. CAL third- place winners included: David Bridges; Debi Sparks; Carol Berger; Linda Ormond; and Clo Haney. CAL Honorable Mention winners included: David Bridges; Anniedeen Creel; Ramiro Gutierrez; Laura Stucky; Vicki Nash (2); Golda Radar; Pat VanVelzer; Ginger Mattei; Debi Sparks (2); JoNan Carr; Sandi Patton; Sheila Templeton; Linda Ormond and Clo Haney.

For the first time at an LSAG convention art show, the “Best of Show” award went to a high school student, Devin Nelson (Brenham Art League) for his pastel painting, “Transition.” The Best Floral award went to Sarah Kitaqaua (Woodlands Art League) for her watercolor painting, “Going Stag.” The “Mayor’s Choice” award, presented at the show by Conroe Mayor Webb Melder, went to Jean Oliver (Katy Arts Alliance) for her oil painting, “Pottery and Silk.
