Music director Daan Singh passes away

NEW DELHI: Hindi film music director Daan Singh, whose melancholic melody, Woh tere pyaar ka gham , provided soul and succour to a generation of broken-hearted lovers, died after a liver ailment in Jaipur on Saturday night. He was 78.

The song, embellished with an elegant piano flourish and a slick saxophone riff, was written by Anand Bakshi and sung by Mukesh for the film, My Love (1970). "It was one of the finest numbers that my father sung. It was also among his finest renditions," says singer Nitin Mukesh.

Another track from the same Shashi Kapoor-Sharmila Tagore flop, Zikra hota hai jab qayamat ka tere jalwon ki baat hoti hai (again sung by Mukesh), continues to be a late night radio favourite. In an interview to The Times of India earlier this year, Singh recalled how fellow composer Madan Mohan loved the way he had used raag Bhairavi in the song. "Arre raag Bhairavi to hum bhi istemal karte hain. Tune ye kaun sa sur mila diya? (We use raag Bhairavi too. How did you come up with such a variation)?," he is said to have commented.

His compositions for the unreleased Bhul Na Jana (1973) too were much appreciated. Two of its tracks, Pukaro mera naam lekar pukaro and Gham-e-dil kis se kahoon, both sung by his favourite singer Mukesh, continue to draw rave remarks on the internet.

Despite crafting such gems, Singh was never swamped with offers. Perhaps it was a combination of bad luck and his inability to market himself that proved to be the composer's undoing. "Na poochiye apni daastan (Don't ask me about my life)," is all he said on his failure to make it big. As Nitin Mukesh puts it, "He was an extremely talented and creative musician who perhaps never got his due."

In recent years, Daan Singh provided the score for two more movies: director Jagmohan Mundra's Bawandar (2000). Unfortunately, the film's songs were not picturised; they could be heard only on the album. And earlier this year, after a long gap, he composed a song, Ugmara suraj (Rise o sun), for the Rajasthani film, Bhobhar (Live ash). "I was happy to discover that my music had stayed with me all these years," said Singh, whose father was a teacher in the school of arts and an occasional khayal singer.
