'Lunch and Learns' increase math strategies

Students in Craven County Schools have increased the number of strategies in their math tool boxes this year. Thanks to Teresa Lathon, Title I Parent Educator, parents and guardians have been provided that same opportunity.

Lathon coordinated “Lunch and Learns” at Ben D. Quinn Elementary, Oaks Road Elementary, J.T. Barber Elementary, and Havelock Elementary Schools. “Math Made Fun & Easy,” after school sessions, were held at Trent Court Housing Authority and Craven Terrace Housing Authority while an evening session, “Math Make and Take,” was offered at W.J. Gurganus.

Students carried letters home and Instant Alert telephone calls were used to invite participant s to attend the sessions focused on mathematics. Food was provided as Math Learning Systems Coaches Lloyd Faulkner, Denise Smith, Rhonda Sneeden, and Director of Middle and High Schools Allison Morris shared a variety of resources and led the group in hands-on activities that could be practiced at home to reinforce mathematical concepts taught at school.

During these workshops for parents, card games were played that would assist in number comparisons, addition, multiplication, and place value. A mathematics tool kit was compiled as a flip chart that contained vocabulary, formulas, conversion charts, fractions, decimals, percents, and many other math facts.

A multiplication ladder made from tongue depressors was constructed by each participant. The ladder can be used for multiplying, dividing, writing equivalent fractions, reducing fractions, and obtaining common denominators. Activities were suggested to help students with money such as guessing which combination of coins would make a certain amount of money. Bullwinkle Math and bead bracelets were demonstrated to increase number sense by composing and decomposing numbers. Area and perimeter problems were explored using paper clips to design a chicken coop with a maximum area.
