Annual threshing bee is Saturday, Sunday at Patrick Ranch Museum
CHICO — Patrick Ranch Museum will host its ninth annual Country Faire and Threshing Bee on Saturday and Sunday at the historic ranch, 10381 Midway, halfway between Chico and Durham.The event, designed for families, is a full-scale demonstration of the wheat harvest from field to grinder, and features a variety of old-fashioned activities that symbolize the pioneer way of life. On view will be the antique binders and threshing machines, trucks and tractors. Visitors will be able to take part in mixing the whole wheat into biscuit batter, and baking the biscuits in cast iron skillets inside adobe ovens. When cooked, they can try the biscuits with butter or honey.
The Threshing Bee experience will be enhanced by vintage bee exhibits, award-winning stock dogs at work, period craft booths, museum booths and a county art show by plein air artists.
Because a threshing bee was not only a work event but also a social gathering, organizers at Patrick Museum place an emphasis on period games for children. A host of activities will be set up in the ranch house's shady backyard. Children can try fishing at the the 70-year-old fountain, make wheat dolls, hand pump water, paint fences, create walnut shell boats, ride pedal tractors, play marbles or croquet, play in a sandbox, face paint, hand wash flour sack towels and hang them on a clothes line, and grind corn and acorns with mortars and pestles.
The Patrick Ranch Historic Store will be open and there will be free expanded tours of the first floor of the 1877 Glenwood Farmhouse.
A tram will transport visitors from various threshing bee events every 90 minutes, enabling senior citizens to get about the grounds easily, and a food court near the tank house will offer food and cold drinks.
Free trolley rides to and from the event will be available. Trolleys leave Chico bus terminal, corner of Second and Salem streets every hour with return trips from the ranch on the hour.
The faire and threshing bee is an event of Far West Heritage Association and presented in conjunction with the Vintage Iron Early Day Gas Engine and Tractor Association, the Golden State Draft horse and Mule Club and an additional three hundred plus volunteers.
